Different types, different styles

There are many types of production techniques and materials, which result in a variety of design options and qualities. Generally speaking, the main materials wallpapers are made of are paper (100% cellulose), vinyl, and non-woven (a blend of cellulose and synthetic fibres that make the covering more breathable, as well as more resilient to wear and tear). When it comes to paper and non-wovens, they are usually made of one or two layers, with the top being printed or coated with paint. However, vinyl wallpapers are not 100% vinyl, as their backing is either paper or non-woven.

Non-wovens – the DIY wallcovering

This variety has recently become the most popular option, at least in private and home environments. It is perfect for do-it-yourself renovations, as it does not need to be soaked. Simply apply the paste to the wall and then lay the non-woven. You can easily remove this type of wallcovering, either by peeling it (the paper backing is left, but it can be easily removed with warm water or a special solvent) or stripping (no residue left to clean). Non-wovens are therefore perfect if you are planning to redecorate, since so little effort is involved in both installing and removing them.

Vinyl – the textured one

They are characterised by their relief-like structure and a three-dimensional effect, as well as a thicker build and very good waterproof qualities. As a type of vinyl, satin wallpapers create a shiny and silky gloss along the surface and are exceptionally hardwearing and flame-retardant. On the other hand, expanded vinyl is at the opposite end, as it is printed with a special ink that swells under heat, creating a soft and foamy 3D texture.

Paper – the cheap wallpaper

This is the most basic kind of wallcovering. It is made of two paper layers, out of which the top one is printed. Paper is a cheap wallpaper option, but it is still a quality product. Some are even washable, and you can choose between flat printed products, as well as embossed ones, which have a 3D textured surface. However, paper is easy to tear during installation and removal, so handle it with care.
