What is cork flooring? All you need to know!

If you're considering cork flooring for your home or workspace, you're not alone. As a result of its eco-friendly origins, cosy feel underfoot, and stylish natural finish, cork is gaining popularity across the UK. Therefore, in this guide, we will answer the most common questions to help you make an informed decision.

What is cork flooring?

Cork Flooring comes from the bark of cork oak trees, which regenerate naturally after harvesting, making it one of the most sustainable flooring options available. It's soft yet durable, provides excellent insulation, and has a distinctive natural look that works beautifully in both modern and traditional interiors.

Why choose cork flooring?

Cork offers a host of practical benefits:

  • Sustainable and renewable
  • Warm and cushioned underfoot
  • Naturally sound- and heat-insulating
  • Easy to clean and maintain
  • Allergen- and insect-resistant

It’s a brilliant all-rounder for comfort, practicality, and peace of mind.

Where can I use cork flooring?

  • Ideal for living rooms, bedrooms, kitchens, hallways, and home offices.
  • Floating cork (click system) is best avoided in bathrooms or high-moisture areas unless properly sealed.
  • Glue-down cork flooring, when correctly installed and sealed, is suitable as cork flooring for bathrooms.
  • Not recommended for basements (unless fully dry and moisture-protected) or uninsulated conservatories due to temperature and UV exposure.

Is cork flooring waterproof? Can cork flooring handle exposure to water?

  • Yes, cork is naturally water-resistant since it's the same material used for wine bottle stoppers.
  • Floating cork can allow water to seep through plank seams if not sealed properly.
  • Glue-down cork offers better moisture protection with the right adhesive (e.g. Wakol) and varnish (e.g. Lobadur Easyfinish).
  • Standing water should always be cleaned promptly.

Is cork fire-resistant?

  • Natural cork exhibits some fire resistance and does not emit toxic fumes when burned, although finishes may alter this property.

Does cork help with sound insulation?

  • Yes, cork absorbs sound well and reduces creaking, making it ideal for upstairs rooms, flats, or homes with pets and children.

Will cork fade in sunlight?

  • Cork is not UV-resistant and can fade over time when exposed to direct sunlight. Use curtains or blinds to protect flooring in sun-exposed areas.
  • Faded cork can often be sanded and re-varnished.

Are cork tiles easy to install?

  • Floating cork floors are DIY-friendly, using a click-lock system and come pre-varnished.
  • Glue-down cork requires professional installation on a smooth, clean, and level subfloor.

Does cork flooring need an underlay?

  • Floating cork usually has a built-in underlay.
  • Glue-down cork does not require underlay, though a 2mm cork underlay can help on uneven floors.
  • Over concrete, always use a vapour barrier.

Do I need a vapour barrier?

  • A vapour barrier is generally not required.
  • It is, however, necessary when installing over concrete or using electric underfloor heating.

Is cork compatible with underfloor heating?

  • Water-based underfloor heating: Compatible
  • Electric underfloor heating: a layer of concrete or levelling compound has to be added between the floor and the heating system
  • Check the installation guidelines of flooring and heating systems.

Do cork tiles come pre-varnished?

  • Floating cork comes pre-finished.
  • Glue-down cork can be pre-varnished or unfinished.

Does cork flooring need sealing or refinishing?

  • If you're installing glue-down cork flooring in a bathroom with a shower, applying an extra layer of varnish is required to prevent water from seeping between the seams of the tiles.
  • You first need to sand the surface gently (with very fine sandpaper), then you can apply more varnish.
  • For any other room, it is not required.

Can I cut cork tiles?

  • Yes, thinner cork floors can be cut with a carpet knife. But floating cork floors (with thicker wear layers) may require a laminate cutter.

Does cork work well with pets?

  • Yes, cork is soft, sound-absorbent, naturally antibacterial, and can be re-finished to repair minor scratches.

What about bathroom use?

  • Only glue-down cork flooring, properly sealed, is suitable for bathrooms. Floating cork should be avoided in wet areas.

How strong is cork?

  • Cork can compress up to 40% and bounce back, but protect it with felt pads under furniture and avoid dragging heavy items.

Can I use cork outdoors?

  • No, cork is for indoor use only; outdoor exposure damages it.

How long should I let it acclimate?

  • Leave unpacked cork flooring in the installation room for 48–72 hours before fitting.

How often should I refinish the flooring?

  • When signs of wear appear, typically every 5–10 years.

Can I install cork tiles over existing cork?

  • Generally not recommended, but if done: ensure old tiles are bonded, clean, flat, dry; use underlay for floating floors; sand old glue-down cork before applying new tiles.

How do I clean and maintain this flooring?

  • Vacuum with a soft brush, use a damp mop (never soak), avoid harsh chemicals, and place mats and furniture pads.

Can I install cork tiles on the wall?

  • No, cork flooring tiles are not recommended for use on walls.
  • For cork wall tiles, you can check out the Granorte Decodalle collection.
