The cork planks come with a central layer of fibreboard, also called high-density fibreboard (HDF), which adds durability and moisture resistance. The click system makes the flooring easy to install, as you only need to click the tiles together.
Durable Cork flooring can be found in many different patterns and colours. The traditional cork design is offered in a wide range of grain and colour tones, ranging from colder to warmer tones. This way, you can choose between the different surface textures that best suit your demands from a variety of options. Similar to wood or stone, there are different design options.
Firstly, upon installation, the floating floor must be stored at room temperature for at least 48 hours before installation.
For a seamless look, make sure that the subfloor is dry, solid, even and clean. All soft-fitted carpets must be removed, but the planks can be laid on existing floor coverings like wood, particle board, OSB, chipboard, linoleum, vinyl, certain ceramic tiles, etc. Old floorboards have to be screwed down and the remaining unevenness has to be levelled using suitable filler.
If the subfloor is concrete, a polyethene sheet must be laid first on top of the subfloor to protect it from moisture. As the floating cork flooring comes with a built-in underlay, no further measures are required for sound insulation.
It is, moreover, suitable for water-based underfloor heating, so you do not need to worry about that. In the case of electric underfloor heating, you must add a layer of concrete or levelling compound between the heating and the flooring.
Expansion and contraction of the cork floating floor can occur, as the planks are made out of natural materials. Thus, expansion joints of 10-15 mm should be maintained at walls and also around pipes and door frames. Expansion joints can be covered with suitable profiles or sealant. Moreover, the click cork tiles are already varnished and are ready to use. And it is essential to avoid glue, as the floor must be able to expand and shrink over time.
As the flooring comes with a high-density fibreboard attached, it is not advised to install it in wet rooms. Depending on the product and manufacturer, there are different room recommendations. If you choose to go for the Granorte floating cork floor, this can be installed in heavy-duty residential areas and for light commercial use.
