Types of Wallpaper : Paper, Non-woven or Vinyl wallpaper?

When it comes to choosing wallpaper, there are two main categories to consider: Paper or Vinyl. Each category has its own characteristics, and it's important to understand the differences between them before making a decision.

Vinyl wallpaper

Vinyl wallpaper  is made from vinyl and acrylic, making it very durable and easy to clean. It is resistant to wear and tear, making it suitable for high traffic areas.  It is also water-resistant making it ideal for wet rooms such as bathrooms and kitchens. It is also easy to clean – you can even use bleach!  Additionally, vinyl wallpaper can be embossed with high-quality textures and patterns, as it is strong enough to retain the shape of the imprint.

Non-woven Wallpaper

Non-woven wallpaper, on the other hand, is made from a combination of natural and synthetic materials and does not contain vinyl, making it a more environmentally-friendly option. It has breathable fibres that help prevent the growth of mildew or mould, making maintenance easier and extending its longevity. Unlike some other types of wallpaper, non-woven wallpaper does not shrink or expand, which means there is no need to overlap the strips during installation, making it easier to hang.

Understanding the differences between vinyl and non-woven wallpaper can help you make an informed decision based on your specific needs, such as durability, ease of cleaning, and environmental considerations. Consider the characteristics of each type of wallpaper and choose the one that best fits your requirements and style preferences.

Installation: Paste the wall or paste the paper?

When it comes to installing the wallpaper there are two common methods for wallpaper, excluding self-adhesive: paste the wall and paste the paper. Both are common in the wallpapering world so you will likely come across both of these. The method you should use depends on the specific wallpaper you are working with, and it is usually noted in the product description or instructions.

Paste the wall

Paste the wall is generally considered the easier method of wallpaper installation. With this method, the wallpaper paste is applied directly to the wall, and then the wallpaper is hung onto the wet paste. This method is often recommended for non-woven or vinyl wallpapers, as these types of wallpapers are not affected by moisture and do not shrink when wet. Paste the wall method also allows for more flexibility in terms of timing, as the wallpaper can be adjusted on the wall even after it is hung.

Paste the paper

On the other hand, paste the paper is the more traditional method of wallpaper installation. With this method, the wallpaper paste is applied directly to the back of the wallpaper and then the wallpaper is hung onto the wall. Overlapping the strips of wallpaper allows for the expansion of the paper when it becomes wet from the paste, and as the paper dries, it regains its original size and the wallpaper no longer overlaps. However, paste the paper method can be trickier to get perfect, as it requires precise positioning of the overlapping strips, and there is no exact science to it. If not positioned correctly, some papers may still overlap even after drying, which can be challenging for perfectionists.

If you are unsure about the installation method or are not confident in your DIY skills, it is recommended to call a professional wallpaper installer for assistance. They can ensure hat the wallpaper is hung correctly and provide expert advice on the best method for your specific wallpaper type.
