What is carpet backing?

Carpets are available with a variety of backings. Many are fitted with a textile backing, usually made of jute fabric or synthetic fabric. The carpet fibres are inserted into the primary backing and given extra durability and stability by the addition of a secondary backing. Jute backing is a common backing and is a great, natural alternative to other backings. Other natural or environmentally friendly carpet backings are produced using recycled materials or easily renewable materials.

Types of Carpet Backing:

The backing of midrange carpets is typically a fleece backing. The fleece backing is exceptionally durable. Additional benefits of a fleece carpet backing are the added insulating properties, insulating your home against impact noise. Fleece backing also adds thermal insulation properties to your space, saving you money when it comes to your heating and cooling costs.

The highest quality carpet backing available is the textile fleece backing. This provides the best of both backings as it is exceptionally stable as well as an insulator. It combines the stability that textile backing, such as jute or synthetic backings with the warmth and durability of a fleece backing.

Carpet backing supports structure of carpeting

Many manufacturers develop their own carpet backings, which are designed to offer the greatest benefit for the type and style of their carpeting line. Some of the goals of these backings include moisture resistance, added comfort underfoot, and added insulation. The quality of the carpet backing is what truly determines the durability of your future carpet. When ordering your next carpet, ensure that it “has your back.”
