Interface was founded in 1973 by Ray Anderson under the name Carpets International Plc., driven by his vision to create a more practical flooring solution for commercial spaces. At a time when wall-to-wall carpets were difficult to transport and install, Anderson saw the potential in modular carpet tiles—flexible, durable, and perfectly suited for high-traffic environments.
What began as a small operation quickly gained traction. By 1983, Interface had gone public, and just a few years later, in 1987, the company was rebranded under the now globally recognised name Interface. A major milestone came with the acquisition of Heuga—yes, the very same Heuga known for pioneering carpet tiles—which cemented Interface’s position as the world’s largest manufacturer of modular carpeting.
Since then, Interface has continued to grow, acquiring over 50 companies and further reinforcing its leadership in the global carpet tile market.
It was sometime in the mid-90s when Ray Anderson realised the importance of preserving the environment and decided Interface should focus on sustainability just as much as on producing attractive carpet tiles of the highest quality. In 1996, Mission Zero was born. The programme was designed to regulate Interface’s production methods and materials, allowing them to become fully sustainable by 2020. Given their incredible progress by 2013 – greenhouse gas emissions reduced by 80% and water use reduced by 87% –, it is highly likely for Interface to achieve their long-time goal.
As part of Interface’s dedication to environmentally friendly products, they currently have more than 450 colourways of recycled carpet tiles with 100% recycled yarn and the number is growing. Additionally, for the modular flooring produced in Europe, recycled carpet tiles contain a maximum of 71.4% total recycled content.
In addition to their strong commitment to sustainability, Interface places great emphasis on delivering visually striking carpet tiles. Inspired by nature—a nod to their eco-conscious ethos—their designs combine aesthetic appeal with innovative functionality. Consistently recognised with international design awards, Interface has earned its place as a global leader in modular flooring design.
Most of Interface’s products are carpet tiles in a regular 50x50 cm format. A few examples of sterling quality are Interface Composure, Interface Equilibrium and Interface Urban Retreat. As is usually the case with modular flooring, their most notable advantages are the incredibly practical format that allows for easy packaging, transport, installation and maintenance. As to the different installation layouts, square carpet tiles do not allow for much creativity.
Most Interface carpet squares are to be installed in either a broadloom monolithic, non-directional or checkerboard pattern. Naturally, you can use your imagination and create originally looking flooring if you combine different shades within a collection, or different textures altogether. Most Interface carpet tiles are brilliant for zoning large areas, so the possibilities are pretty much unlimited.
As the design masters they are, Interface realised that square carpet tiles are not ideal when it comes to styling unique flooring. Thus, they came up with the idea of making carpet planks, or skinny planks as they call them. These planks essentially retain all carpet tiles’ advantages, adding a bit more freedom when it comes to installation layouts.
So in addition to the normal broadloom seamless pattern, you can try a herringbone layout if you want to mimic parquet and achieve a 3D effect, an ashlar installation resembling hardwood flooring, or just mix up the different planks for a one-of-a-kind carpeting.
