Cortex: First-class contenders

Cortex began as a family business specialising in cork-based flooring in 1986. Today, Cortex is one of the leading premium suppliers of floor solutions with cork technology (corktech). Their philosophy revolves around the well-being of their customers, the use of natural, permanently renewable resources, innovations and first-class products.

Design at its best

The 12 wood aesthetic designs in this collection set it apart from all of the rest. Whether you want wood-look cork flooring that has detailed knots and a distressed look that oozes character, you will surely find your perfect match. The mild beige tones of the Cortex Designatura “Limed Oak” with an even and balanced tone and delicate structure will suit a neutral-toned theme with pastel accents.

On the other hand, you could opt for the Cortex Designatura “Moor Oak” which has rich chocolate tones that can be contrasted nicely with stark white textiles and furniture to give a visually interesting, modern impact. The warm mid-brown tones of the Cortex Designatura “Select Oak” create a welcoming and friendly vibe to a room, inciting a social atmosphere.

If you want to bring a Scandinavian touch to a room with sheepskin rugs and simple wooden features then the Cortex Designatura “Alpine Oak” with its pale white tones or the highly textured appearance of Cortex Designatura “Ice Sea Pine” with knotted details for a Nordic nuance to the room.

Performance that lasts

The beauty of Cortex products lies in the perfect balance of stylish designs and technical features that ensure every aspect of your flooring can support you and give your home the ambience you desire. Cork is an exceptional material when it comes to flooring. The construction of the plank is designed to improve performance and longevity.

Construction

The initial layer is a cork mat for impact and sound insulation. This cork technology (corktech) ensures that there is a reduction in the impact of walking on the flooring giving less stress to your joints. It also helps to minimise the noise from footsteps when walking across the planks.

The thermal conductivity allows you to enjoy a warmer flooring option in comparison to many other floorings, outperforming wood, vinyl and ceramic floorings. The next layer consists of an HDF support panel waterproofed with CORKLOC® connection. This makes for an easy installation method and additional support with a moisture-resistant characteristic. The digitally designed cork veneer has a photorealistic image of your chosen wood optic to create an inspiring design for your home using cutting-edge technology. The cork gives you all the features mentioned before with excellent sound, impact and moisture resistance.

The final layer is a surface sealant called HCPRO2 which is described by the manufacturer as an “extremely hard-wearing hot-coating sealant” making it ideal to be used as office cork flooring. This protects the design layer of the plank whilst adding scratch resistance and durability. It is perfect for heavily used living spaces and moderately occupied commercial areas.

Comparison to alternatives

When compared to other floorings, you can see how much more you are getting with cork flooring. Firstly, in terms of thermal conductivity, cork floors outperform wood flooring, vinyl and ceramic when tests have been performed.

The sound insulation test showed that cork flooring can reduce noise by up to 53% which is due to its honeycomb construction made from pockets of air that absorb sound and impact vibration.

In comparison to linoleum, laminate and ceramic flooring, cork flooring scored higher about its comfort which is understandable due to the impact absorption properties of the material. Tests have shown that Amorim Revestimentos cork flooring is the perfect mix of overly hard and soft ground.

Furthermore, they protect your body as they reduce tension and fatigue. Cork’s elasticity and compressibility make it resistant to pressure. The result is a very robust and durable floor covering. Studies show that Amorim Revestimentos cork flooring has the best properties in terms of shock absorption in comparison to carpet, linoleum, laminate and ceramic flooring.

Environmentally friendly flooring

Cortex has earned itself the Blue Angel eco-label which relates to the commission for sustainable forestry and low emissions. This means they meet the high standards of the Federal Environmental Agency which reviews these requirements every 3 – 4 years to stay in line with the latest technological advances.
